By the time Larstan secured the rights to publish Mommy, Where Do Customers Come From? author and internet marketer extraordinaire Larry Bailin was at the tail end of a very successful online promotion of the book in the form of a pdf-based eBook. With that knowledge, in taking the book to the physical realm we couldn’t stray too far from the design conventions that Larry had already successfully spread into the ether. The original cover of the book was text based, featuring the mascot from Larry’s Billy Gives Back charity campaign.
While we did explore some unrelated options in the concepting of the final artwork, our main focus was on touching up the text based layout, tightening it up, creating a more vibrant color scheme and creating more impact at the shelf. We used the knowledge we picked up in our time spent hand-setting type to strengthen the original eBook cover and then began to lay the foundation for a grid system to be used on the interior pages. For the interior, each chapter was assigned a different position on the grid, allowing for easy thumb navigation through the book.
